form as function

Academia, steeped in its vision of progress, has taught me to abstract. It has taught me to abstract from the pain of history, from the weight of the past, and from the messiness of agency. I know to cautiously trust the rationality of science and to constantly question culture. I know to see people as chameleons and to believe in meritocracy. I know how to treat choice as a given, and to then judge it against ‘good’ and ‘bad’. I know that economies of scale are the most efficient way of organizing. I know that more choice leads to freedom, which then leads to happiness. I know that to follow this formula is to achieve success. I know that to never question is to validate the consensus.
